In the 2016-2017 season, Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre has continued the development of Refuge in anticipation of our World Premiere of the finished piece. Season events have included: White Night on Saturday, April 8th at Reflections Yoga Center in Gramercy and Footprints Dance Festival May 18-20th. Upcoming engagements include: Green Afternoon on August 5th, in East Hampton, NY, Dance Festival in Wassaic, NY mid-August, and Refuge World Premiere, November 2-4, at Mark Morris Dance Studio in Brooklyn, NY.
Refuge, inspired by Francesco Clemente’s Encampment. explores isolation, inner reflection, and the creation of sacred space. Selwyn translates this personal journey into a vocabulary of immediate, athletic, sensuous, and raw movement that has come to define her work. The piece includes a progressive series of solos and duets punctuated by group sections that magnify the personal experience into a shared one.
